Fam is male. In As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World, the waitress appearance is a disguise. His real role is leader of the Shadow mercenary group, which specializes in intelligence gathering, infiltration, and covert operations.
Fam also eventually becomes one of Ars’s retainers. He does not start out in that position: their relationship develops from paid assignments into a commitment Fam chooses for himself.
What I like most about Fam is how someone so guarded comes to trust Ars. That trust is often clearest in his work and decisions, rather than in a long speech about loyalty.
Spoiler warning: This article discusses Fam’s decision to join Ars and events in volumes 9–11 of the Japanese manga. All volume references are to that edition, not the light novels. Other editions and the anime may cover these events at different points.

Is Fam male or female?
Fam is a man who disguises himself as a woman while working as a tavern waitress. His appearance can make the answer confusing at first, but the waitress persona is part of his disguise.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is Fam male or female? | Male |
| Who is he? | The leader of the Shadow mercenary group |
| What is his tavern role? | A waitress persona used as a disguise |
| What does he specialize in? | Intelligence gathering, disguise, infiltration, and rescue missions |
| Does he join Ars? | Yes. He eventually joins with his mercenary group. |
Fam takes pride in his disguises. Ars and Mireille seeing through his appearance gives him a reason to take their abilities seriously.
For me, the appeal is the contrast between the person working in the tavern and the capable leader carrying out dangerous assignments behind the scenes. His disguise is an introduction to a character whose importance goes well beyond his appearance.
Does Fam become Ars’s retainer?
Yes. Fam eventually offers to enter Ars’s service together with the Shadow mercenary group. However, working for Ars on a particular assignment and becoming his retainer are separate stages of their relationship.
- At first, Fam accepts assignments from Ars as a mercenary.
- Through their dealings, his trust in Ars grows.
- He later chooses to join Ars’s service with his group.
That distinction matters because Fam is cautious about people. Completing a paid job does not automatically mean he has decided to follow the client. His eventual offer carries weight precisely because it is his own decision.
Why does Fam join Ars?
He sees potential in Ars’s future
Fam explains his decision in practical terms: Ars may not yet be a powerful figure, but he has the potential to become one. Supporting him early is a calculated choice.
That explanation suits a mercenary leader who has to consider the future of his group. Ars’s ability to discover talented people gives Fam a reason to believe that serving him could lead somewhere.
Ars treats him as a person
There is also a more personal reason. The Shadow group is useful to its clients, but its involvement in covert work, including assassination, can make those same clients fear or dislike its members.
Ars treats Fam normally and thanks him for his help. Fam is not simply a useful tool to be brought out for an unpleasant task and then kept at a distance.
My reading is that this gives Fam something more valuable than a promising employer: a place where he can feel human. His practical explanation about Ars’s future and his emotional response to Ars’s treatment can both be true.
This is the part of Fam’s character I find most appealing. He reminds me of a wary cat that does not easily approach anyone, then decides for itself to stay nearby. Ars does not force that closeness; his everyday behavior makes it possible.
Fam’s important missions: infiltration and rescue
Fam does more than obtain information. He helps turn plans into results. Finding talented people and devising a strategy are important, but someone still has to carry out the dangerous work.
Japanese manga volumes 9–10: rescuing a hostage
One important example is the rescue of a commander’s wife, whose captivity prevents him from freely cooperating with Ars’s side during the fortress campaign.
The sequence spans two stages: negotiations in volume 9, followed by Fam’s infiltration of the castle and rescue mission in volume 10.
Persuasion alone cannot resolve the situation while the hostage remains in danger. Fam removes the obstacle that makes cooperation impossible.
That is why this mission stands out to me. His role is not merely to support an existing plan in the background. His successful rescue creates a way for the campaign to move forward.
Japanese manga volume 11: saving Couran
In volume 11, Fam uses shadow magic to save Couran when Tomas attempts to kill him. It is another example of Fam delivering results in a crisis, beyond his work in disguise and intelligence gathering.
To understand Couran’s broader position alongside Ars, see Is Couran an Ally or Enemy? His Relationship With Ars Explained. That article contains spoilers for later Japanese manga volumes as well.
Why does Fam refuse Couran’s reward?
After the rescue, Fam declines Couran’s offer of three bags of gold. This is a refusal of a reward for the rescue, not a scene in which he rejects an offer to become Couran’s retainer.
Fam makes it clear that Couran is not his employer. To me, his response expresses his commitment to working for Ars, even when someone of higher standing offers an immediate reward.
It would be easy to focus only on how much money is offered. What makes the moment memorable is that Fam’s choice is about whom he serves. I see his trust in Ars in that decision more clearly than I would in a grand declaration.
Fam’s identity and loyalty: the key points
- Fam is male. The tavern waitress appearance is a disguise.
- He begins as a hired mercenary. He later chooses to join Ars with his group.
- His reasons include both opportunity and trust. He sees Ars’s potential and values being treated as a person.
- His actions show his importance. Infiltration, rescue missions, and his response to Couran’s reward reveal what he contributes to Ars’s side.
Fam’s ability makes him useful to Ars. The way Ars treats him helps explain why he chooses to stay. For me, that combination of competence and carefully earned trust is what makes him such an enjoyable character.
